Canary Wharf bank on the future

Grundfos Pumps,The HSBC Tower,Canary Wharf

8 Canada Square XCHARX better known as The HSBC Tower XCHARX has been the global HQ for HSBC Group since it was completed in 2002. The 45 floor building was designed by Sir Norman Foster’s team and, at 656ft, is the second tallest building in Canary Wharf.

When the building started to experience problems with their water boosting system, they turned to Grundfos Pumps to recommend a solution.  Having ascertained that the original non-Grundfos pumps were not ‘fit for purpose’, the Grundfos team of sales and service personnel worked with Vear M&E Services to tailor-make the solution.

Needing to replace 40 bar pumps, including the related vessels and control panel, in a very confined plant room (the pumps only had 4” headroom clearance) whilst the building remained fully operational, presented a huge engineering challenge to all the parties concerned.   The solution that incorporated 5x25bar Grundfos CR32, needed a lot of carefully planning and co-ordination and once the solution was in situ, the Grundfos Service team remained on site for the first 48 hours to ensure there were no issues.

The whole process went very smoothly and the pumps continue to operate beautifully and without any problems.  Canary Wharf has not just changed the London skyline forever, but also reinforces London as a global financial centre and Grundfos are proud to be playing a small role in keeping the financial wheels turning.
