The Western Morning News highlights how farmers are being warned to lock up and store fertiliser safely in order to keep it out of the hands of terrorists. The warning comes as Home Secretary, Theresa May, speaks during the counter-terrorism awareness week conference at the Royal United Services Institute in Westminster.
Fertiliser is a widely used component in the fabrication of home-made explosives and counter-terrorism officials have warned farmers to pay close attention to the safe and secure storage of this valuable commodity. The warning comes as police call upon rural communities to help foil an extremist attack on UK soil.
Theresa May announced a new package of measures in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill, a bill that is being introduced to parliament this week which is geared towards tightening up protections in the UK.
The National Farmers Union has a ten-point guide to the ‘dos and don’ts’ of storing fertiliser securely and it tells farmers that the ammonium nitrate constituent of fertiliser is a favoured ingredient by terrorists and they must do their utmost to keep it out of the hands of terrorists. Amongst these points are guidelines including; don’t store fertiliser where the public have access, don’t leave fertiliser in fields overnight and don’t store fertiliser close to public highways.
Storing liquid fertiliser in robust vertical storage tanks, or horizontal tanks is a must and Enduramaxx tanks are made from a rugged, single piece of uv-stabilised polyethylene. Protecting fertiliser from spillage, leakages and of course theft, especially when stored in secure buildings, are just some measured that farmers can take to secure their stocks of this valuable, yet potentially dangerous medium.
